The jurisdiction of Madras Central Excise Collectorate at the time of the introduction of the Central Excise & Salt Act, 1944 covered the entire area under the then Madras Presidency viz., from Vijayanagaram in the North to Kanyakumari in the South and from Madras in the East to South Canara in the West. Madras Collectorate was reorganised and Bangalore & Cochin Collectorates were newly created in 1957 & 1960 respectively. In 1971, the Madurai Collectorate was created. In 1983, 2 new Central Excise Collectorates at Coimbatore and Trichy and 1 Customs Collectorate at Trichy were carved out of Madras and Madurai Central Excise Collectorates. In 2002, the Chennai Central Excise and Service Tax Zone covering Tamilnadu & Puducherry was bifurcated into 2 Zones and Coimbatore was made into a Central Excise Zone having jurisdiction over 5 Commissionerates viz., Coimbatore, Salem, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai & Tirunelveli. After the introduction of GST in 2017, the entire central excise and service tax formations across India were reorganised. During the reorganisation Tamilnadu & Puducherry were made into one single GST Zone and Coimbatore was again made into a Commissionerate.
